Creating Custom Color Schemes for Your Community

“Case Study…” Description of the HOA Color Project

Working with a group of about 8 members, and a point person for communication

We started with the goal to create a new color plan for them to apply to all 126 residences, with color versions that the residents could select from for their own homes.

  • In addition, I’d prepared about 7 door colors for them to make their own homes stand out without changing the entire building.
  • Ultimately they decided to apply same body colors in groups, and with white trim on all homes throughout. But to make their individual homes stand out they did some front door variations.

"Before" Gallery

In this first group, you’ll see the neighborhood with original colors. Note the various siding styles, and the stucco buildings in white with dark brown trim.

Based on our discussions of requests and color direction, I then created a number of new palette variations for them to choose from, shown below in the “Inspirations” gallery.

Thanks to the HOA management for providing the initial images marked A, B, C, D.

"Inspirations'" Color Views Gallery

The variety of DCP digital colorviews images I prepared for the group shows some examples of color inspirations that I created to stimulate their imaginations about what might be possible.

The stucco home variations are shown first, followed by regular siding homes’ variations.

You can see they had a lot to choose from, but I wanted to demonstrate how the relatively limited palette of actual color selections could be applied in various ways, being repeated on either body or trim areas, to create a cohesive yet distinctive group of homes.

"After" Gallery: Some Residents' Final Color Selections

The group appreciated the inspired images but finally decided on a single-color, block style of color distribution with same color trim (white) throughout the community.

This update made a significant difference! These images show the varieties of color distribution the residents selected, in a ‘walk-through’ of the neighborhood.

They did use my suggestion of ‘painting out’ the stucco trim for a less “busy” look overall. I always appreciate the thoughtful client participation and detailed consideration of the materials I provided for them.

Our HOA needed to repaint 126 residences and a clubhouse using an entirely new color palette as our existing colors were very outdated.

To ensure that that this ambitious project would conclude on time and on budget with sufficient buy-in, Barbara’s contribution was an important early strategic piece in the Board’s project plan to put color decision-making in an objective, professional context.
